·   4.30pm Tea and coffee on arrival. Optional teas and coffees in the Assembly Hall, a chance to mingle before the first of your learning sessions begins.

·   5pm-6.20pm Session One: The Crucial Third Bid

It is opener’s rebid that defines their hand – the pivotal moment for many auctions. In our first session, we explore the variations.

·   6.30pm Three-course set-menu dinner.

·   8.15pm-9.45pm Chicago bridge (optional): Andrew and his team supervise play in the Thundridge Room.

11th March 2023

·   7am-9am Breakfast (for residents)

·   09.40am-11.00am Session Two – The Responder Line

How responder shows their strength and enables the partnership to assess the appropriate level for which to contract. Andrew irons out some common misunderstandings in this realm of limit bidding.

·    11.20am-12.40pm Session Three – Counting Winners

Crucial session – when declaring, counting your winners is the vital thought process required to assess your strategy to decide whether to establish a long suit, trump in dummy or perhaps to cross-trump.

·    3pm-4.30pm Chicago bridge (optional): Andrew and his team supervise play in the Thundridge Room.

·    5pm-6.20pm Session Four – The Two-Club Bid

Whether the response to a suit opener, a notrump opener (Stayman), an opening bid or an overcall, Andrew clarifies this multifaceted bid.

·    6.30pm Three-course sit-down dinner.

·    8.15pm-9.45pm Chicago bridge (optional): Andrew and his team supervise play in the Thundridge Room.

12th March 2023

·   7am-9am Breakfast (for residents)

·   09.40am-11.00am Session Five – Third-hand Plays

In this lesson on defence, we see just how many tricks the defence can win if they observe crucial mottos such as “third hand plays high”.

·   11.20am-12.40pm Session Six – Golden Cards

In the last session, we’ll see that the number of high-card points is far less important than where they are. We’ll be upgrading seemingly mediocre hands and making a surprisingly large number of tricks as a result.

·   Depart at your leisure
